Appearance Matters for Real Estate Success

Business attire shows you're ready for businessAppearance is all about perceptions. And, like it or not, how we are perceived is based, to a large extent, on the image we project through our outward appearance. In real estate where you are your own boss, nobody is going to tell you what to wear. Instead, it will be reflected in your income.

Your appearance is the first impression. Real estate is a business based on meeting people and clients are going to feel more comfortable with agents who look the part. We expect doctors, bankers, lawyers and other professionals to maintain a professional appearance at all times. If a doctor you are meeting for the very first time walked into the examination room wearing casual attire may give you pause as to his or her credibility. That’s the power of appearances. It creates a perception from the first impression.

What people wear can be revealing. It’s an outside look into someone’s character, credibility and personality. That’s why dressing casual may be fine for a stroll in the park, but is not suitable attire for real estate appointments. However, men and women have different perspectives about their image. A poll conducted by Ipsos Reid found that ninety percent of women believe that image does have an impact on their career, while just thirty-seven percent of men believe it affects theirs.

Fashion changes and there are regional differences that can reflect where professional attire fits in. “Spend the time necessary to pull the pieces from your closet that imply your happiness, security and best qualities. Respect, confidence and self-empowerment can all start with your diligence to apparel,” said Lindsey Shores, fashion stylist. So, if you’re wardrobe needs a bit of updating and you’re looking for ideas on the latest trends visiting your local boutique, apparel or department store can be a good starting point. Also, your firm may provide career training for real estate agents that can help ensure you have the tools to excel.

Maintaining a professional appearance is not difficult, time consuming or expensive. You don’t have to be a millionaire to look like a million dollars. Since appearance is such an integral part of creating a positive first impression any investment you make in clothes and accessories can payoff in dividends.
